Ready to Point and Shoot? More tips for making your pictures great!

With your new digital camera in hand, we know you are ready to become the newest member of the paparazzi.  However, we have a couple of simple tricks to help get the most out of your photos. So if you are chasing down Britney Spears or just chasing your kids down the soccer field, follow these tips for the best pictures possible:

1)      When possible try turn off the flash indoors; use lamps or open windows for natural light, it will increase the richness of color.

2)      Off with his head; minimize accidentally amputating your subjects, by double checking that all their arms, legs and head are in the photo.

3)      Stay clear of the flash reflection; make sure your avoid taking photos where the flash might reflect off a window or a mirror.

4)      Avoid being behind the shutter bug; when taking action shots, be sure to be in the action by having your shot pre-focused and your finger half down on the shutter button. This way you will ready go once the action starts.

5)      With the sun to your back; always position the sun on your side for better outside shots.

Digital Camera Savvy

I am on my second or third digital camera, but I am only now really starting to feel like I know how to use it! I thought I needed a more expensive camera but now I realize I just need to know how to use the one I have.  I learned something important recently—if you use the focus lock to pre-focus your shot it really reduces the “oops” factor.  Holding the shoot button halfway down, I get a little green box in my viewfinder if it is in focus or a red box to let me know I need to try again.  That is great!  I wish I had known that years ago.  There’s nothing like downloading my pictures and finding none of them came out right.  That’s the other realization I had—take a look at the pictures right away to see if they are okay or if I need to keep trying.  Better to do that while still at the recital rather than at home later when it’s too late!  And here’s my last best trick: Read the manual!  I used to feel superior when I could figure out how to use something without looking at the instructions.  I didn’t need to study—I could figure it out by myself!  Imagine my surprise when I read the manual to my camera one day and found that all of those buttons and options in the menu could actually be useful and help me take great pictures!  There are also lots of online tips for how to make the best use of your digital camera.  You’ll find many things are easy to use in a simple way, but a little research can uncover lots of advice on how to get the best use of your electronics.
